Oregon sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar found in the high desert of eastern Oregon, and one of the few gem feldspars native to the United States - a detail that resonates with designers sourcing domestic or traceable material. What sets it apart is schiller, an optical effect caused by copper platelets within the stone that produce a soft, shifting metallic shimmer; intensity varies from stone to stone, which gives each piece its own character. Feldspar has two directions of perfect cleavage, so it rewards careful setting and is best suited to protective settings rather than high-exposure applications like unguarded ring stones.
