Plume agate is a variety of chalcedony in which mineral inclusions - typically iron oxides or manganese - form feathery, branching plume structures suspended within translucent to opaque material, and it is those inclusions that make each stone visually distinct and unrepeatable. Indonesian material in particular tends toward warm, saturated iron-oxide colors, and the variation in plume density and direction means no two stones compose quite the same way under a bezel or prong. Agate sits at about 7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, making it a reliable and low-maintenance choice for most jewelry applications.
