Plume agate gets its name from the feathery, three-dimensional inclusions - typically composed of iron or manganese oxides - that appear to float within the chalcedony base, making each stone a one-of-a-kind composition that no faceted stone could replicate. Indonesian material is well regarded for the density and color range of its plumes, and the natural banding and color variation common to this origin give designers something to work with rather than simply frame. As a microcrystalline quartz, agate is durable enough for most jewelry applications and takes a good polish, though the thin cab profile here calls for a thoughtful bezel or setting that protects the edges.
