Plume agate is a variety of chalcedony agate in which mineral inclusions - typically iron oxides or manganese - form feathery, branching plume structures suspended within the translucent to opaque body of the stone. Because the plumes are three-dimensional inclusions, a well-cut cabochon can give the impression of depth, almost as if the pattern floats beneath the surface, which makes the cut and dome height genuinely consequential design decisions. Indonesian material is known for vivid, painterly color combinations, and designers are drawn to plume agate precisely because no two stones share the same internal composition - the inclusion pattern becomes the focal point of the piece.
