At the center of this necklace is a petrified wood opal from Indonesia — a stone formed over millions of years as ancient wood slowly replaced itself with silica, preserving organic structure while developing the opalescent play-of-color characteristic of precious opal. Indonesian petrified wood opals are prized for their warm base tones and the way fossilized wood grain shows through the stone's translucency.
The cabochon is hand-set in a fine silver bezel, fabricated to follow the stone's natural profile. Balanced asymmetrically on one side is a spessartine garnet — an orange-to-mandarin variety of garnet named for the Spessart region of Germany — whose warm mandarin hue echoes the earth tones in the wood opal. A handmade hook clasp completes the opposite side of the pendant, maintaining visual balance.
The entire piece has been finished with a liver-of-sulfur patina, oxidizing the silver to deepen the contrast between the metalwork and the stones and lending the piece an organic, time-worn quality. The chain is sterling silver, 22 inches in length.
