Peruvian opal is prized for its soft, milky translucency and pastel body colors - seafoam, pink, and blue - that come from hydrophane opal formed in volcanic deposits along the Andes. Unlike precious opal, it carries no play-of-color, but that quiet, diffused light transmission is exactly what draws designers to it for pieces where subtlety is the point. Opal as a species requires some care in setting and wear - it ranks 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale, is sensitive to heat and sudden temperature changes, and should be kept away from ultrasonic cleaners.
