Oregon Sunstone is a gem-quality labradorite feldspar found almost exclusively in the high desert of Harney and Lake counties in Oregon, with the Ponderosa mine being one of the most respected sources for material with natural color and schiller. Unlike most feldspars, Oregon Sunstone owes its color to microscopic platelets of native copper suspended within the crystal lattice - a feature unique among gem feldspars worldwide. This copper content is responsible for both the range of body colors, which run from colorless through yellow, peach, pink, salmon, and red, and for the adularescent-adjacent phenomenon known as schiller, a glittery metallic aventurescence that appears as light moves across the stone. Oregon Sunstone is the state gemstone of Oregon and is mined domestically in small quantities, making clean, well-cut material with visible schiller genuinely limited in supply. It is not heated, irradiated, or otherwise treated in the trade, and material from named mines like Ponderosa carries full traceability.
