Oregon Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar found in a handful of high-desert deposits in Harney and Lake Counties, Oregon - one of the few gem-quality feldspar localities in North America and one of only two commercial sunstone sources in the world producing material of this color range. What makes Oregon Sunstone mineralogically distinct from other feldspars is its copper content: native copper platelets suspended within the crystal structure produce a schiller effect - sometimes called aventurescence - that shifts and catches light as the stone moves. This copper also drives the warm peach, orange, and red hues the variety is known for. Lighter material with pinkish peach tones and soft schiller is common in the deposit but less frequently seen in finished form, making these rose cuts a practical option for designers who want the material's optical character without committing to deeply saturated color. All Oregon Sunstone is untreated by convention; there are no known treatments that apply to this variety. It carries a hardness of approximately 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, which requires some care in setting and wear applications.
