Oregon Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar - specifically labradorite - found in only a handful of locations worldwide, with the Ponderosa Mine in Lake County, Oregon producing some of the most mineralogically significant material available. What sets Oregon Sunstone apart from other feldspar gem varieties is its copper-bearing nature: thin platelets of native copper suspended within the crystal lattice create aventurescence, known in the trade as schiller. This optical effect ranges from a soft, diffuse glow to bold, metallic flashes depending on the density and orientation of the copper inclusions. Red is the rarest color expression in Oregon Sunstone - the result of higher copper concentrations - and fine red material in faceted form represents a small fraction of total production.

These stones carry no treatment of any kind; the color and phenomenon are entirely natural and stable. For a designer sourcing regionally significant, fully traceable material, Ponderosa-origin stones offer both mineralogical credibility and a domestic provenance story that resonates with today's market.

These are faceted oval stones weighing approximately 1 carat each, cut to 8x5mm or slightly larger. The four available stones are: S1 at 0.90ct measuring 8x5.1x3.4mm, S2 at 0.96ct measuring 8.2x5.3x3.8mm, S3 at 1.00ct measuring 8.1x5.1x3.5mm, and S4 at 1.00ct measuring 8.3x5.5x4.0mm. The color is an intense red with the kind of saturation that reads well in both warm and cool metal settings. Schiller is present in all stones, though its intensity varies per stone - an inherent characteristic of the material rather than a quality deficiency, and worth considering when matching stones to a specific design intent. The consistent oval format and near-uniform size make these practical for repeat settings, pairs, or small suites. Depth varies between stones, with S4 carrying the most material at 4.0mm, which may influence bezel depth or prong placement decisions. Stones are sold individually.
