Petrified wood opal forms when silica-rich water gradually replaces organic wood material, sometimes preserving the original cellular structure while introducing the hydrated silica that gives opal its character - in this case from Indonesia, a source known for producing wood replacement material with earthy, organic patterning rather than the play-of-color associated with precious opal. What makes this variety appealing to designers is exactly that quality: the color comes from the replacement minerals and the original wood pigmentation, giving each piece a natural, almost geological palette that pairs well with organic or mixed-media work. Opal as a species warrants some care in setting - it is relatively soft at 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, sensitive to heat, and can be damaged by ultrasonics, so cold setting or low-heat techniques are recommended.
