Opalized wood forms when silica-rich groundwater replaces the cellular structure of buried wood over millions of time, preserving the organic grain and growth patterns in opal - which means each stone carries a record of its source material alongside whatever color or opalescence the silica deposited. Indonesian material in particular tends toward earthy, warm-toned color combinations with visible wood texture, making it distinct from the bright play-of-color associated with Australian precious opal. Designers are drawn to it for exactly that quality: the intersection of organic structure and mineral replacement gives these stones a character that cut glass or synthetic material cannot replicate. Opal as a species warrants some care in setting - it is relatively soft at 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, sensitive to heat, and can craze if subjected to sudden temperature changes or ultrasonic cleaners, so bezel or protective settings and hand finishing are worth factoring into your design process.
