Moss agate is a chalcedony - a microcrystalline quartz - where manganese or iron oxides have grown in branching, plant-like patterns called dendrites through the translucent body of the stone. Designers are drawn to it because no two stones share the same internal composition, and the inclusions interact with light differently depending on how the stone is oriented in a setting. At around 6.5-7 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, it holds up well to most jewelry applications and is generally straightforward to work with.
