Tourmaline is one of the more compositionally complex minerals in the gem world, and that complexity is exactly what gives it such a broad color range - from soft pinks and greens to deep blues and multicolor combinations that shift across a single stone. Cabochon cutting tends to be chosen for tourmalines with optical phenomena like chatoyancy, or for material with inclusions that would interrupt a faceted stone but read beautifully in a smooth dome. Tourmaline has no cleavage, which makes it a relatively forgiving stone to set and work with, though it is mildly pyroelectric and piezoelectric, so avoid prolonged ultrasonic cleaning.
