Fossilized coral, sometimes called agatized coral, forms when silica gradually replaces the original calcium carbonate structure of ancient coral over millions of years, preserving the characteristic radial or honeycomb cell patterns that make each piece visually unique - Indonesian material in particular tends to show well-defined patterning and a range of earthy to saturated colors depending on the mineralizing fluids involved. Designers are drawn to it for exactly that reason: the organic geometry built into the stone does a lot of visual work on its own, making it well-suited to settings that let the face show. It takes a good polish and is reasonably durable for everyday wear, though as with any silicified organic material, avoid harsh ultrasonic cleaning.
