Fossilized coral - sometimes called agatized coral - forms when ancient coral colonies are slowly replaced by silica or calcite over millions of years, preserving the original skeletal structure in cross-section as distinctive flower-like or honeycomb patterns. Indonesian material is well regarded for its pattern clarity and color range, and the organic patterning means no two pieces are alike, which many designers find compelling for one-of-a-kind work. Because fossilized coral is essentially a microcrystalline silicate, it is reasonably durable for cabochon use, though the porous nature of less fully replaced material can make it sensitive to prolonged exposure to chemicals and ultrasonic cleaning.
