Fossilized coral - also called agatized coral - forms when ancient coral colonies are slowly replaced by silica or chalcedony over millions of years, often preserving the original skeletal structure as visible patterning in the finished stone. Indonesian material is well regarded for the quality of its preservation and the range of colors it develops, and dark green examples are less common than the more typical tan and brown tones. Because the material is essentially chalcedony by the time it reaches a lapidary, it is reasonably durable and takes a good polish, though the internal fossil structure can occasionally create soft spots, so bezel settings are generally preferred over prong work.
