This golden yellow and tan Fossil Palm Root cabochon is a trillion-cut loose gemstone ready for jewelry making.
This is an exceptional example of the eye patterning found in fossilized palm root cabochons. The golden yellow and tan tones highlight the natural cellular structure that creates those distinctive eye-like figures across the face of the stone.
Fossil Palm Root is a silicified organic material - ancient palm wood replaced over millions of years by silica, preserving the fibrous vascular structure of the original tree in fine detail. That preserved cellular geometry is what produces the repeating eye or dot patterns designers find so appealing, and because the replacement mineral is essentially chalcedony or quartz, the material is reasonably durable and takes a good polish. Indonesian material is well regarded among collectors and designers for the clarity and density of its patterning.
