Fossilized palm root is an organic sedimentary material from Indonesia in which the original cellular structure of ancient palm tissue has been replaced by silica, producing a pseudomorphic stone that reads mineralogically as chalcedony or microcrystalline quartz while retaining the fibrous, radiating patterns of the original root cross-sections. The Indonesian deposits are considered the primary commercial source globally, and material showing clean quartz replacement with intact patterning and strong tonal contrast is genuinely scarce. These stones occupy an interesting position for designers because the organic geometry - concentric rings, radiating cells, and linear grain - provides inherent visual structure without surface treatment.
These six pairs range from approximately 19ct to 23.4ct per pair, with elongated cabochon outlines spanning roughly 27mm to 35mm in length and 10.5mm to 13mm in width at depths of 3.5mm to 4mm, proportions that suit horizontal bezel settings, long bar pendants, or stacked cuff applications without requiring deep seat depth. The color progression within each stone moves continuously from warm brown through mid gray to near-black, a zoning pattern tied to variable silica density and trace mineral content during fossilization, which gives each piece directional tonal movement that can be used intentionally in an asymmetric or graduated design. The quartz replacement quality on this material is notably high - clean, with low porosity - which means it will take a stable polish and behave predictably in standard fabrication.
