Fossilized palm root is an organic material formed when ancient palm wood is gradually replaced by minerals - most commonly silica - over millions of years, preserving the cellular structure of the original wood as intricate patterning in the stone. Indonesian material is especially well regarded for the clarity and contrast of its figuring, and the Palm Root Eye pattern, where the cross-sections of vascular bundles create repeating eye-like shapes, is one of the more sought-after variations among designers working with organic stones. As a silicified material it has reasonable durability for cabochon use, but because it is organic and can vary in porosity, avoid prolonged ultrasonic cleaning and exposure to harsh chemicals.
