Fossilized coral - sometimes called agatized coral - forms when silica gradually replaces the original calcium carbonate structure of ancient coral colonies, preserving the radiating, flower-like cell patterns that make each piece visually distinct and unrepeatable. Indonesian material is well regarded for the clarity of its preserved structure and the warm, neutral tones that read well against both metals and other stones. Because the replacement process can be uneven, hardness may vary slightly within a single stone, so setters should apply even, moderate pressure and avoid ultrasonic cleaning, which can stress areas of incomplete replacement.
