Ethiopian opals - particularly those from the Welo region - are known for their play-of-color, which in these clear-bodied stones can shift across the full visible spectrum depending on the angle of light. Unlike Australian opals, Ethiopian material is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb water and temporarily shift in transparency or color play, which is worth keeping in mind during fabrication - avoid prolonged soaking and ultrasonic cleaning. Designers are drawn to these stones for their organic movement and the way a rose cut, with its flat back and faceted dome, lets light travel through the body while still capturing that rolling spectral shift.
