Ammolite is an opal-like organic gemstone formed from the fossilized shells of ammonites, found primarily in the Bearpaw Formation along the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta, Canada - making Canadian origin significant for quality and traceability. Its color play comes from light interference in thin layers of aragonite, and the spectral range and intensity of that shift is what drives value; stones showing full-spectrum rotation are the most sought after by designers. Because ammolite is quite soft and the color layer can be thin, it is most commonly set in protective bezel settings and should be kept away from ultrasonics and steam cleaning.
