Oregon sunstone is a feldspar - specifically a labradorite - that forms with copper inclusions rather than the sodium and calcium layering responsible for labradorite's adularescence, and it is that native copper that produces the warm metallic schiller many designers seek out. It is one of the few gemstones commercially mined in the United States, and material from the Plush, Oregon deposits is notable for its range of color - from near-colorless through peach and salmon to deep reds and bicolors - driven by varying copper concentration. Feldspar has perfect cleavage in two directions, so setters should work with care and avoid ultrasonics, but the stone is otherwise well-suited to a range of jewelry applications including bezel and prong settings.
