Oregon Sunstone is the only feldspar gemstone commercially mined in the United States, sourced primarily from Harney County in southeastern Oregon, and the best material commands serious attention for its copper-driven schiller and a color range that includes the rare reds and bicolor stones that gem-quality material occasionally produces. The aventurescence - that soft metallic shimmer - comes from microscopic copper platelets within the stone, and in bicolor pieces the color can shift or zone in ways that reward thoughtful orientation when setting. As a feldspar, sunstone has two directions of perfect cleavage, so it benefits from protective settings and care during any fabrication work.
