A selection of fine 5.5mm round spinels from Okkampitiya, Uva Province, Sri Lanka — choose from three individually listed stones in purple, teal, or blue. Okkampitiya is one of Sri Lanka's most respected gem-producing localities, sitting within the island's storied gem belt that has supplied the world's finest sapphires, rubies, and spinels for centuries. Sri Lankan spinel is particularly prized for its clarity and the range of rare secondary hues it produces — colors that are difficult to source consistently from any other origin.
Spinel is a singly refractive gem with no cleavage and a hardness of 8 Mohs, making it one of the most durable and optically lively colored stones available. Its single refraction produces a crisp, undoubled visual sharpness that differentiates it from sapphire and other doubly refractive gems. These practical properties, combined with its color range, make spinel an increasingly preferred choice among designers working with fine colored stone.
Spinel is not routinely treated. No heat enhancement, fracture filling, or coating is applied to these stones. Color is entirely natural.
