Oregon Sunstone is a plagioclase feldspar, specifically labradorite, found in hardened lava flows in southeastern Oregon. What sets it apart mineralogically from other feldspars is the presence of native copper platelets suspended within the crystal lattice - these platelets are responsible for the schiller effect, a metallic aventurescence that shifts and flashes as the stone moves under light. Most sunstone on the market is colorless to pale yellow or peach; stones with saturated red or copper color are a direct result of a higher concentration and particular orientation of those copper inclusions, making them genuinely uncommon. The Ponderosa mine is one of the few documented sources producing stones of this color intensity, and material in this size range with strong red saturation represents a small fraction of annual production. Oregon Sunstone carries no treatments of any kind - what you see is entirely the product of the natural mineral chemistry.
