This oval Oregon sunstone cabochon has subtle Schiller that causes a dreamy effect across the stone. Schiller is caused by small, flat reflective inclusions that align themselves along the mineral structure. Oregon Sunstones are unique as the schiller effect is caused copper as opposed in Indian sunstones which are caused by hematite.

Oregon Sunstone is the only feldspar variety that produces schiller - a metallic, coppery flash caused by tiny platelets of native copper suspended within the crystal - and the Ponderosa and Dust Devil mines in Lake County have become the primary sources for material that ranges from pale yellow to deep red, with the saturated orangey-reds sitting at the top of the value scale because of their rarity. Feldspar has two directions of perfect cleavage, so setters and bench jewelers benefit from a heads-up when working with these stones - bezel settings or protective prong placement over the girdle are worth considering over aggressive tension or channel work. Designers are drawn to Oregon Sunstone for its combination of American origin, natural untreated color, and that warm metallic life that reads differently under every light source.
