Oregon Sunstone is a labradorite feldspar found in volcanic basalt deposits in southeastern Oregon, and its domestic origin carries real market appeal for designers working with American-sourced materials. What sets it apart optically is aventurescence - a metallic flash caused by copper platelets suspended within the crystal - which in schiller-rich stones shifts and moves as the light angle changes, giving cabochons a lively, almost liquid quality. Feldspar has two directions of perfect cleavage, so it rewards careful setting choices: bezel and tension settings that protect the girdle are worth considering over prong styles that leave the stone more exposed.
